At 8:03 a.m. on Jan. 23, 2025, an 11-year-old boy was hit by a train at a footpath rail crossing near Kenley in Croydon, south London, and died. He had been walking this route to school for four months.
The inquest heard he was watching an eight-second video a friend had sent him on WhatsApp as he entered the crossing. The train's forward-facing camera showed a "glowing object in his hands." He was not wearing headphones.
"did not perceive the danger of the train approaching, probably because he was distracted by his mobile phone"
— the jury's finding (Sept. 24, 2026)
As a second probable cause, the jury said the crossing had no active warning system — no lights or sounds to signal an approaching train. The coroner said she would write a report on preventing future deaths.
What this case shows
Even a short video holds a child's eyes and attention for several seconds. At a crossing with no warnings, those seconds are everything. If there's a rail crossing on your child's route to school, make it a "phone in your pocket" spot together.
