In February 2022, a boy walking through a shopping mall in Istanbul while looking at his phone fell through an open maintenance hatch to the floor below. He landed on a pile of cardboard boxes and wasn't hurt.

On Feb. 14, 2022, a boy walking through a shopping mall in Istanbul while looking at his phone didn't notice a maintenance hatch left open in the walkway and fell to the floor below.

He landed on cardboard boxes stacked below and wasn't hurt.

What this case shows

The danger isn't only in the road. Anywhere the ground changes — building work, stairs, escalators — a moment looking at a screen can mean a trip or a fall. This time, he was lucky.
